A Throne on the Clouds
The Story
Daniel sees beastly empires rising out of a churning sea — kingdoms that devour and are devoured, the whole brutal pageant of human power. Then the scene shifts to heaven: “one like a son of man” comes on the clouds into the presence of the Ancient of Days and receives a kingdom that, unlike all the others, will never fall. “Son of man” simply means “a human one” — yet he comes on the clouds, which only God does, and receives the worship of all peoples. Daniel is shown a figure who is somehow both truly human and clearly divine, and to him belongs the one throne that lasts.
What It Calls Us To
We live among the beasts of Daniel 7 — empires, ideologies, and powers that promise permanence and always pass away. The vision calls us to stop pinning our hope on kingdoms that rise from the sea, and to give our allegiance to the One whose dominion will not. It is an invitation to live now as citizens of the kingdom that outlasts every headline.
How Jesus Fulfills It
“Son of Man” was Jesus' favorite name for himself — he uses it of himself more than eighty times in the Gospels. He was claiming this vision. At his trial, when the high priest demands to know if he is the Christ, Jesus answers in Daniel's own words: “you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven” (Mark 14:62) — and they condemn him for blasphemy, because they understand exactly what he claims. The astonishing thing is the road this King took to his throne: the Son of Man “came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). He received the everlasting kingdom by way of a cross — and he is reigning now, and his dominion shall not pass away.
Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life… that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, now and ever. Amen.
