Heaven Opens Over a Runaway
The Story
Jacob is on the run. He has just swindled his brother out of a blessing and deceived his blind father, and now he is fleeing for his life with a stone for a pillow. By every measure he deserves nothing from God. And precisely there, in the middle of nowhere, with a fugitive con-man asleep on the ground, heaven opens. He sees a stairway joining earth to heaven, angels traveling up and down it, and the LORD standing above it — not to scold him, but to renew the covenant promise: “I am with you and will keep you wherever you go.” Jacob wakes astonished: “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.” The word the dream answers is the oldest human ache — how does the gap between a holy heaven and a guilty earth ever get bridged? God's answer is not a command but a ladder, and it comes to a man who could never have climbed it.
What It Calls Us To
We tend to assume God meets the deserving — that He shows up for the spiritually tidy and keeps His distance from the rest of us. Bethel says otherwise. Grace finds Jacob at his lowest and least worthy, and it finds him first; he is asleep when heaven opens. So the call is to stop performing for a God who already comes to schemers in the wilderness. And there is a quiet humor here worth savoring: God's great covenant future runs straight through a man whose name literally means “heel-grabber, deceiver.” If He can build redemption out of Jacob, He is not waiting for you to become impressive first.
How Jesus Fulfills It
Years later Jesus meets a man named Nathanael and tells him, “you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man” (John 1:51). It is an unmistakable quotation of Bethel — and Jesus puts Himself where the ladder was. He is saying: I am the stairway Jacob saw. I am the meeting place of heaven and earth, the one in whom the gap is finally closed. Jacob's ladder was a picture; Jesus is the reality. At the cross the true ladder is set up on the earth and its top reaches heaven, and by it sinners who could never climb are carried up in Him. “Surely the LORD is in this place” — yes, and supremely on a hill outside Jerusalem, where God came down to a guilty earth so that guilty people could be brought home.
O Lord, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
